Public Invited to Attend Senior Scam and Fraud Prevention Workshop on September 16 in Urbana

FREDERICK, Md. – The Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence will host a Senior Scams and Fraud Prevention Workshop on Wednesday, September 16, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Urbana 50+ Community Center, located at 9020 Amelung Street, Urbana, MD 21704. This free event is open to older adults, caregivers, family, and community members.

The workshop brings together community partners committed to educating older adults about scams and fraud, helping them stay informed and protected. Presenters include local law enforcement, financial experts, a real estate team, and a title and escrow company.

Elly Williams, Service Navigator with the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program will be sharing tips about how to recognize and prevent Medicare-related scams, fraud, waste, and abuse. A local resident will share a personal story about being scammed, giving attendees a real‑life insight into how fraud happens and how to avoid it.

“By joining forces, we strengthen our ability to effectively educate our community about frauds and scams,” said Jayme Duva, Ombudsman with the Division of Aging and Independence’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. “Collaboration allows us to share insight, amplify awareness, and work together to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to protect themselves.”

Attendees will learn about current scam trends, how to spot scams, and ways to protect themselves and their loved ones. There will be a Q&A session, and light refreshments will be served. The goal is for everyone to leave feeling more confident and informed.
